FWR Contributor Joe Reilly's New Podcasts Up And Running

Readers will know how insightful and useful Reilly's interviews with scores of wealth management figures are, and now he's built two podcast series. Highly recommended.

Long-time contributor to this publication and FWR editorial board member Joe Reilly has launched two podcasts covering the family office world.

The first, Private Capital, will interview investors, allocators, and company founders to understand how they make investment decisions. He most recently interviewed Gautam Mukunda, a former Harvard Business School professor and protégé of Clayton Christensen, about leadership in investment management.

The second, The Inheritance Podcast, will cover the important non-financial issues in family office work such as inherited wealth, trusts, philanthropy, family governance, and wealth in the larger society. His initial podcast, with UHNW Institute members Jim Grubman and Dennis Jaffe about their seminal paper on The Inheritor’s Dilemma, was particularly well received.

Reilly gave some of his thinking behind the podcast format.

“People managing family offices today have to be learning machines. They want to hear new perspectives, but they also like to hear how others have worked through family office issues, both financial and non-financial. And the podcast format is ideal for that. I think of these podcasts as a deep discussion with groundbreakers and top practitioners, as sort of an endless ideal conference.”

“The current investment world is constantly changing aggregations of people and capital. You must be in the information loop, and much of it is online. You have a problem that seems unique to you, but you also know someone else has probably already had this problem. People just want to comprehend and take action, and I thought the best way to reach family office CIOs and CEOs [would be] through ideas and frameworks. Eventually, I would like to have a complete family office playbook for all these issues.”

“I was also inspired by all the great podcasts out there like Ed Marshall at Dentons who does Family Office Intel; Kirby Rosplock has one at Tamarind; Frazer Rice of Pendleton Square does Wealth Actually; Tom McCullough from Northwood does Wealth of Wisdom; and Russ Haworth does a great family business podcast, as does Ramia El Agamy at Family Business Voice. I also like Invest Like the Best, Acquired, Capital Allocators, and Business Breakdowns. The internet is a noisy place, but you can find the signal and find interesting people and they lead you to new ways of thinking. I have met so many amazing people since I launched and look forward to interviewing many compelling thinkers in the future.”

(Editor’s note: I am delighted that Joe Reilly, who has written scores of excellent interviews for FWR, is getting into the podcasts arena. Knowing Joe as I have for a decade and having valued his insights, I can testify to how perceptive these are, and I urge readers to add them to their regular listening.)
